Radical overhaul of car tax set to hit motorists hard

Walk into any new car showroom these days and you see displayed next to the glistening motors a fact sheet about performance of the vehicle, economy and CO2 emissions. Most of us are sold on the shiny motor, how it looks and feels and don’t really give a second thought to what road tax will have to be paid. Maybe we will decide whether to purchase a petrol engine model, diesel, electric or hybrid, but that’s as far as any thought process goes about performance.

Equal Pay in the Workplace

It seems only fitting that on the 100-year anniversary of women gaining the right to vote the momentum surrounding women’s equality is stronger than ever. With all the ‘Time’s Up’ and ‘Me Too’ campaigns it’s hard to ignore the fact that despite how far equal rights have come, women are still having to fight to get equality in the workplace. This is no different for the issue of equal pay and with recent, high profile scandals within the BBC and Tesco it seems that this is going to be very much in the foreground for the foreseeable future, and quite rightly so!

Fundamental Dishonesty in Personal Injury Claims

When you have an accident and suffer loss, the law says that you should be put in the same position as if the accident never happened. So, say you lost income you will be compensated for the precise amount of the loss. Injuries are given a financial value and once more you receive money for the injuries suffered in the accident. But, what if you try to profit or gain from an accident. Can you do this? Well, unfortunately not. Moreover, the implications of putting forward a claim that is not honest and genuine are very serious indeed.

When Insurers don't pay up

Like many holidaying couples Paulina Krzysztoszek and her husband Morgan purchased travel insurance to cover their holiday of a lifetime to the Far East. They chose an insurer who provided a comprehensive policy that seemed to meet their needs. Baggage loss was covered, theft, and medical expenses all standard stuff for a holiday insurance policy . Reassured that they had done the right thing they set off on their holidays in the comfort that should something go wrong they had the backing of a seemingly reputable insurer. Unfortunately for Morgan, upon arrival in Singapore he developed problems breathing and was admitted to hospital on the 31st May 2017 with a life threatening condition. Paulina contacted their insurers, certain that they would pick up the tab for the medical bills. However, they refused to pay out citing an exclusion that they don’t have to pay for any medical condition related to a pre-existing problem.

Compensation is changing

Most people are aware that if they suffer injury because of someone else`s fault they can claim compensation. Years ago, the process of claiming compensation was a quiet, boring industry that did not attract very much attention from the media or the Government. However, following the virtual abolition of legal aid and the introduction of a “no win-no fee” system a new and somewhat less restrained market opened up. Very soon you could not switch on your radio or TV without someone offering to take your case on a no win no fee contract.

Mediation in personal injury claims

Many people may think that once a claim is made, either it can only be settled by the parties’ legal representatives or the claim has to go to Court and be decided upon by a Judge. If a case does go trial, this will often be several years after the accident. Clearly, this can be a long and stressful time for clients. Quite often, no agreement can be reached between the parties’ legal representatives. In such circumstances, going all the way to trial is not the only option.
